Coleman Barks and Anne Bourne
This evening you are invited to enter the ecstatic world of the great 13th century Persian/Tajik poet and mystic Jalaluddin Rumi, one of the world’s perennially most beloved writers and spiritual figures. Through poetry, music and commentary, Coleman Barks, one of the pre-eminent interpreters of Rumi’s poems, accompanied by the brilliant cellist Anne Bourne, will lead us in a journey through Rumi’s mystical inner landscape. Coleman will also draw from his new translation of the poetry of Rabindranath Tagore, the Bengali poet, novelist, musician, painter and playwright (the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, in 1913), who carried on the spirit of Rumi in the 20th century, to explore the sense of ecstasy and the crucial importance of the “beloved” or the sacred “friend” in both poets’ work.
