Rural Riddle: Do Jobs Follow Broadband Access? - washingtonpost.com - 7 views

    • Dale Thompson

      What is the "digital divide"?
    • Ashleigh Natter

The divide between Lebanon and Rose Hill- The Internet was able to help one town by attracting good paying jobs, while the other town only got a few home-based businesses.
    • Bryan Duarte

What are the differences between people with access to information technology than those with limited or no access at all?
    • Nicholas S

It can be allot, with the world as it is many (often high paying jobs) use or require access to IT in order to function (communicate). So often it can be the difference high tech jobs and low tech jobs.
    • Dale Thompson

Do you believe high-tech innovation will lead to jobs? Explain.
    • Ryan Clark

I do believe high-tech innovation will lead to jobs. I think this way because informational technology will just continue to expand. This will open up more fields for things such as science and technology, which will lead to more jobs for people.
    • Andrew Gerbehy

High-tech innovation will mot definitely lead to more jobs. From the people who will have to do the dirty work and create the power lines to create internet connection, to the people who will have to maintain the internet, it will end up creating more jobs for Americans.
    • taziana molinaro

yes i do. more and more companies are becoming tech savy. The expansion and understanding of high tech innovation will just further the ability to job opportunities.
    • James Kenny

No i actually think it will lead to loss of jobs. With all this high tech stuff coming out, I believe there will be machines taking our place and doing most of our jobs better, and faster then us. Do you think machines with their own minds will ever be created?
    • Lexis LaMaestra

Yes i think that high-tech inovations will lead to more jobs for people. This is because as techonolgy continues to expand and better itself, it will require more people to assist it. This will make more job opportunities for people.
    • vanessa campo

I agree with James because not everyone is fortunate enough to learn about computers. I know my parents do not know about computers, so if they were told that they needed to work a computer tomorrow or you're fired, they would get fired. Also, people that are 18 in other countries might not have what I have and if they were to come to this country then they would also not be able to get computer jobs because they do not know how to work computers.
    • Bianca Cruz

I do believe that high tech innovation would lead to an increase of jobs. Although people seem afraid that the increase of technology would lead to machines taking the jobs of people. This is not the case. For every machine there are specialist who work them, fix them and create them. And high tech innovation does not mean that every job or career would call for people to be tech savy.
    • Dale Thompson

Can you think of other reasons why one community succeeded while the other is showing no growth?
    • taziana molinaro

Possibly dependent on the communities acceptance of the high tech sort of lifestyle
    • Jeannie Farrelly

Other communities probably do not care

  • One attracted two large companies that created 700 good-paying jobs for residents. In the other, only a few home-based businesses got off the ground.

Why did one do so well and the other not so much ?
  • questioned whether bringing high-speed Internet has a direct effect on jobs and the economy.
    • Lynsey Vivian

I think that it will help buissnesses and therefore jobs. The internet is a great resource.
  • Residents with limited exposure to technology and low education levels may struggle to meet the job qualifications of tech-sector positions.
    • Lynsey Vivian

Why not help these people? if we give them the computers then they will be forced to learn and not pushed back in society.
    • George Streisel

Maybe these people are happier the way they are and shouldnt be forced to change their ways.
    • taziana molinaro

i think there should be no questions about the positive effects of the internet, through the years the internet has proven itself and continues to do so as it improves and grows to expand companies worldwide
  • converted an old strip mall to a training center that allowed residents to get their high school equivalency diplomas and prepare for jobs as technicians and information technology workers.
    • vanessa campo

This is very smart because everyone that lived there got to get jobs as technicians and information technology workers. Why can't other people in other communities have this oppurtunity?
  • President Obama has touted broadband as a means toward transforming rural and low-income areas, setting aside $7.2 billion in the stimulus plan to help create jobs and close the "digital divide."
    • Bianca Cruz

Does everyone feel comfortable that he put aside so much money specifically for the expansion of technology?
  • Many high-tech companies have heralded a January report by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, a research organization, that stated that an investment of $10 billion in broadband networks across the country would create nearly 500,000 jobs
    • Stephen Ingram

where is this 10 billion coming from? our counrty is broke!
  •
    1) Answer a question. 2) Add a question for other.
  •
One community would succeed with this and one wouldn't because of the willingness to change their norms and add the new highly technical ways. If one community were to be against it, then its safe to assume that they would show no growth. Does having a lower education have an effect on how much one can learn in the tech world?

  • And the education gap cannot be dismissed,
    • Dale Thompson

What does he mean by "education gap"?
    • Lynsey Vivian

Those people may not be aware of technology and what the capabilities are.
    • taziana molinaro

It's sorta like how although our generation grew up with the opportunity to access and use the internet, our grandparents, or even some parents did not have this opportunity and are stuck learning technological advances at an adult age even thought their children have grown their whole lives with them
    • anthony guarnieri

I agree with Taziana, I think the generation of high school and college students have a greater advantage to learning information technology . Also, a great example of the growth of knowledge for information technology would be how my mom works for a company that goes around to pre-schools and teaches three and four year old children all the basics of using a computer.
    • Bryan Duarte

Yes, I would like to add my input into the points of Taz and Anthony. The "education gap" is a reality we are all faced with. The youth of the United States are growing up in an environment where it has increasingly become important for them to learn information technology whereas my elders and my own generation has not been granted the same. As stated earlier by Professor Dale Thompson, technology doubles every two years and people need to consistently educate themselves on the new technology or they will fall behind in the job competition and/or own lives. The youth of our nation are being raised with technology being a main priority. Hence, they will grow learning to understand how to use the wide range of information technology much more effeciently than the elders of the nation.
