This lesson focuses on the importance of maintaining data integrity and Security issues related to computer hardware and software that manipulates the data. Students will identify issues related to security and describe the impact of viruses that come in many forms. Students will perform one focused research activity using Delicious, one using Google, and acollaboration activity using Google Docs.

Through indirect instruction students will be problem solving by comparing and contrasting the past and the present to determine the possibility of a particular outcome. They will use the information they learn to write a paper to inform their readers and create a multimedia presentation. The compare and contrast will be an easy approach because they will be able to take the two time periods and put them on charts to see what happened in each time period.

The main student activity is completed in a wiki. The students will complete their paper in the wiki. They will collaboratively compile their research in the wiki and then collaboratively write their paper in the wiki. This is a group project that will be completed in the wiki because I have found that using the wiki allows students to work together and gives them a place to have discussions as well as post the work they gather. PBWiki has a live chat session available so they can set up times for their group to meet and discuss their project as well as work on it on their own time.

The main pitfall I see to this lesson plan is going to be the student who does not have access to the internet at home. These are the students that will not contribute to the project as much as they could and will count on the other students to do most of the work. I believe overall the lesson plan is effective and will be successful, I will need to make sure that the students that do not have access to internet outside of school have time at school to work on the project be it before school or after school or during a study hall.

Personal Financial planning lesson. Students will create a digital story and collaboratively write a paper in a wiki comparing and contrasting the depression of the 1930's and the current recession. Then the students will use GoogleDocs to create their own Personal Financial Plan.

Just as a message to you about the evaluation, I feel that you are at a disadvantage (before I begin the review process) because you did not use Wiki and it is harder for me to navigate through FrontPage because I am unfamiliar with it. It does look similar to Dreamweaver. I think that anytime students are able to explore different sites on the internet that they learn. My students have ot do research on the internet. This is effective because they can cross reference their information on more than one site. My students have to make a Powerpoint presentation. This is effective becuase its an assessment tool that gives student the opportunity to be creative.

My students are able to use discussion boards, Powerpoint, Delicious, and Google. They also have to upload their projects to a web site.

I think that my lesson plan is successful. My students will obviously get the interaction and background in the classroom so that the project is less confussing. I think that if they only went off of the web sites that there would be greater confussion.

When students are able to bounce ideas off of the teacher they get clarification on the items that were unclear. I make sure that my students who need extra clarification or simplified directions get it. This way I can also walk the students through the steps one at a time if needed.

Great work!! Your project fits well in a 3rd grade classroom and it is a topic students will be very interested in. The graphics are a bit large and take away from the layout at times, but other than that great work!! Aim/Purpose-Expert Statement explains why they will be doing this project in a direct statement. Lesson Plan/Teacher's Guide/ Instructional Plan-Mastery Lesson plan included in full, loads properly! Student Activity Page-Mastery Direction page is to the point, but the corresponding activity pages lack details at times. I could not tell what the 3D animal was or how to do it. If other teachers wanted to use this project it may be confusing. Parent Page-Mastery This page makes the suggestion to Google the animal with child- no other "support" really offered. Layout-Mastery The layout is good and very usable. There are some graphics throughout the project. Navigation-Expert The navigation bar is very helpful. Indirect Study (ID) is very effective in the use of this project. The student can learn and review at their own pace and the instructor takes a back seat becoming a facilitator, supporter, and resource person. The student takes on the responsibility for their learning experience, and sets their own pace, and depth of study. This type of learning process is key when the learners are in their clinical settings. Independent Study (IS) is another effective strategy used in this application. Students are asked to review the content at home. Learners are purposefully provided opportunity to foster the development of individual student initiative, self-reliance, and self-improvement. In nursing clinical(s) such developments are required to become functional as a nurse. Direct Instruction also applies in the context of this project, as the selected websites, provide step by step instructions of where to listen and what is being heard by the learner. The repetitive methodology of this allows the learner to have modeled what they need to achieve. Most of the physical side of nursing is repetition until appropriate skill is achieved, be the techniques of starting an Intravenous site, or diagnosis of normal verus adventitious sounds.

I do not have a true discussion board assembled for this project. There is a Wiki based response area suggested for each page all connecting main pages, (not links), for comments and questions about the page. There is direction on the learning activities page for participants to dialogue on learning experiences and concepts. I added a Diigo book-marking page under the same name as the web site. As an overkill in the book-marking I also placed a link to delicious. At current retrospect I have probably set up to many locations to blog or chat.

To a point of showing students stethoscope placement, and giving a very basic auditory demonstration of what some anatomical sounds are, I think the lesson is okay. Certainly having so many places for students to write comments to would make tracking questions difficult. Futuristically I would use a better program to generate a web page, that better directs and limits wiki discussions, or blogs. With development of skill in using a web creation program I could greatly improve my project. I think a curriculum construction course would also be greatly helpful in understanding how to put it all together for proper presentation to all.

Another thought that just came to me it that the required textbook pages need to be a PDF and available on line. In the context here, I do not have the ability to create PDF, so I did not pursue it. I also believe I would have needed to obtain some permission of it use, so that also detered me from a possibly greatly improving piece to my project.

It is correct to have many places to have sutdetns to comment is difficult for instructors to track. Consider to have some management tools, such iGoogle to manage all tools we use. Using Web 2.0 tools and not use management tools could be difficult for learning and teaching.

I had not thought of it, adding gadgets would make some features really "cool" as the saying goes. I liked some of the youtube features others have, i am not sure what exists for nursing that would be appropraite. I need to look into it!

I was pulled in to want to know more and I could feel the personalization, without knowing you well. Fine Job! Group collaboration. Is utilized throughout lesson, from researching sites, comparing notes, application and designing a book for presentation. Production Process - the planning of all learning is taught in the Process Writing Exercise. Pre-production (the beginning) involves the brainstorming. Production (the focus) Drafting and developing. Post-production (feedback) review and adjustment. Expectations: Tried to make sure that there were no questions as to what is expected, and that the lesson was easy to follow.

I have used the wiki thread as a response area to immediately involve the student's use of wiki interaction. I also incorporated NiceNet as another conference area exposing a useful site, set up with the lesson plan as well. Using other websites to teach is purposefully fun, and is a means for collaboration. Actually building a book on-line teaches by example the tools available. The home page is meant to grab the visitors attention with something to do...the use of color for immediate interest and watch a video introduction to graphic design. The script is available for diversity; I would like to further develop a better universal design in my web site. I actually filmed and edited the video, so integrating this technology is what I feel teaching web-based is all about. Application. (and learning how to put the video on the website) :)

I feel my web-based lesson plan is effective and will be successful. The challenges that may hinder the application is the possibility of having too much to do for one lesson. I started the plan with too much content and cut back on what I wanted to cover. Having too much can be overwhelming, not only for the students, but for myself as well. I am sure that I will be able to address this when I put this into action. Is a struggle for me to access the time necessary to be productive and efficient, without over-doing. (but I have sooo much I want to say)

The students are using a hand-on approach to retrieving and creating information. They will be responsible for their own learning in this way. They will be creating many aspects to their final projects, report, diorama, presentation, and posted picture. By them taking a hands on approach they will be more invested and engaged in their learning. The students can also choose to be working cooperatively or independently. The choice gives students the opportunity to determine the best learning for themselves. They are also determining which style of learner they are which will benifit them in all other learning endevours. The students will also be working on time management, organization, and long term projects. They will be developing these skills to enhance their future and curent education.

The instructional technologies that are in this lesson are posting a digital picture to the web page, having a discussion or commenting in the discussion area, and (I know it is not an instructional technology, but it is a very important skill to learn) navigating the websites to complete a task. Uploading the picture to the web page is going to be the most challenging technology part of the lesson. The students can, and I predict will, be using the discussion section to chat with each other.

I am excited about this lessom plan. I think the students will love to be able to go online to get the information and all of the resources they will need to complete the project. They will benifit from navigating through the site and the individual responsibility they must use to complete the project. As far as pitfalls, the most difficult task for the students which will require help and assistance will be posting their picture of the diorama to the website. I think they will be able to do everything else, and I am hoping they surprise me with their abilities and I will be able to add even more things into the nest web-based lesson plan.

I think one instructional strategy that is effective is the use of video tutorials for Picassa. After seeing Will's comments about having videos for actual tutorials, it made me realize how visual my students this year are. They are more likely to pay attention to a video than me telling them how to do something. Another would be the use of a photo as inspiration. I think it is important that they take this picture and have owernship in it. So often they have creative blocking when they are told to create from someone else's idea. This will hopefully motivate the creative spirit. And third is group collaboration. I think my students really flourish when they are given the chance to step back and evaulate others. The evaluation and brainstorming is also going to be written so it is something they can visit multiple times to get clarification.

I am using google sites, which is a wiki. Students will also be using Picassa which in an online gallery/photo editing software. The wiki will act as the discussion board (as soon and I figure that out :) )

I need to get a parent page up- I am at a loss right now what to include on it since technology is somethign most of my parents do not have access too, also I need to make it bilingual. I think overall my lesson has the potential to be very successful. My students love anythign to do with the digital cameras and this group really got into poetry this year. Any reason to break out technology in my classroom usually equals success for this group of kids. I can forsee their being some confusion on how to collaborate with the revising process and i think that instruction clips on how to create a haiku could be very beneficial. I think that I may even film my opwn students giving the instruction to help promote buy in amongst them.

Aim/Purpose-Expert- You have a very clear first page which defines what you are going to do. Lesson Plan-EXPERT!! Why didn't I think of using the taskstream lesson plan builder? It is great Student Activity Page-Expert-the activity page shows a very good set of activities. Parent Page-Novice-There is a parents page, but it is empty. In your case you teach 5th graders so I do believe a parents page is necessary. Layout-expert. the page is very nicely laid out. there are no glaring colors, or distracting locations. Navigation-mastery- The upper left hand menu bar doesn't seem thought out. . There is only one choice to naviaget to Haiku 2.0. I cannot access any of the other pages except through Haiku 2.0 (unless I use the site map). You cannot navigate away from the Lesson Plan at all. and the directions at the bottom of the page go in order of haiku 2.0 lesson plan parents plan Q&A resources and then student activities page. They seem jumbled to me. Accessibility- N/A There are very few images, but the ones that she has do not have Alt tags, or any other accessability issues. Fonts-Expert- Fonts are consistent and do not distract. Background-Mastery- Background is simple and cheerful. Color Choices-Mastery- Very few colors, but does not distract. Spelling and Grammar-Expert- No errors I can see. Copyright-Expert- Very little content needed citing. Extensive use of links to actual web sites. Contact Information-Novice- No authorship on each page except that is provided by the google sites. My only other issue is that on this page there is NO other form of instruction besides text. There are no visual images of people making haiku (youtube has tons of videos on haiku). There are no images of the structure or format of a haiku. So it is a single channel method of instruction. With that said, i realllllly like this project. I think it would be fun to do with my kids. I wish the page itself was more interactive.

Thanks Will! I know I need a parent page :( I struggled with what to put on that page since technology is something most of my parents do not have access to, plus I need it to be in PSanish as well. Before I use this in my classroom I plan on getting that up and running. I agree that videos about haikus would be very beneficial- thanks for the suggestion!

I double checked - using view source to verify the presence of ALT tags - they are there. ALT tags are designed to show when the image does not - my images load up just fine so you won't see the ALT tag unless you view the HTML source.

Michaela- Great job! I think with a few tweaks you will have a powerful learning tool on your hands. My biggest complaint is some of the color choice for fonts- but it is minor and easily fixed. -Melissa Aim/Purpose-Novice- There is a statement about the page being used for collaboration, but I would of liked to have seen more about the aim/purpose relating to the aspect of Women's Suffrage. This may be something that is discussed in class, but if another teacher wanted to use it, this would be unclear. Lesson Plan/Teacher's Guide/ Instructional Plan-Mastery- Link is included and detailed lesson plans are attached. Student Activity Page-Expert- Detailed instructions, great links, and a detailed rubric are all attached. Parent Page-Mastery- Includes a letter to parents explaining project. Layout-Mastery- Minor complaint- the color of the text gets lost at times and the fact that you have to scroll a lot to get important information on the home page detracted from the overall layout. Three most effective instructional strategies integrated in my project are group discussions between those who peer reviewed each others work, being able to have a electronic copy of the lesson plan virtually any where they are (where are computer is present), and the use of invesigation when examining different articles.

My students were to use wiki to post and discuss each others work. The focus was for the students to post their papers and have others in the class peer review. The use of the wiki is widely accessible for many students to access every students paper in the class. This in the end provides opportunities for students to have numerous peers evaluate their work.

I do believe this can be effective in the classroom, although I do think after I teach it I will have to reflect on it to master the art of developing this lesson. Some pitfalls for me as of now is the assesibility of the web site. It is still unclear to me how to put ALT tags on my web site for other to view it. Other than that, I feel I will have to help my students through wiki. Most students will not understand until they completely "get" the whole process.

Well in review I can certainly see I have more than just much to learn about development of lesson plans. Your though ness in thought and design are staggering to me. I was struggling with the technology, and had no concept of what lesson plans looked like. This is another very impressive and humbling to lesson plan. Excellent work! The only problem noted was a link issue with Oregon Pioneers By Stefanie Flora, my computer could not open it, and I been having a lot of problems of that nature.

I feel that my use of auditory, visual, and interactive forms to present the lesson materials coincides with not only enhancing the EFL learners experience with the lesson by providing greater exposure to the target language but also fulfilling universal design principles. Combining the ways the lesson is presented makes the lesson accessible to those with particular special needs or learning styles. The lesson is very much structured in the constructivist frameworks of inquiry based and project based learning as learners produce a final product through the process of investigation, discussion, collaboration, and reflection. The lesson provides instruction on how to begin the process and provides adequate scaffolding in the form of videos, supporting links, and discussion forums with both instructors and peers. However the route the learner takes is up to them. An important element of the lesson is that learners choose their own topic. I initially had structured the lesson around animal rights with three possible questions for investigation. However, upon reading related literature which revealed that activities were more successful and learners got more out of them when they pursue their investigation on a topic of personal interest (Clark, 2006). I have included wikis, discussion forums, and the social bookmarking tool Delicious. The wiki was chosen for its capacity for editing. Given that a large part of the lesson is about peer editing using a wiki was a logical choice. Wetpaint wiki was specifically chosen given the integration of the discussion forum which is used throughout the lesson. Discussion forums were used to get learners thinking about the concepts of the lesson and to build rapport between learners prior to the editing process. Another element of the lesson requires learners to research out information on the Internet and reference those sources. Delicious was chosen because it allows learners to easily keep all the sites they have found in one place and to share resources. Though it was suggested to use Diingo for learners to leave feedback during the peer edit portion of the lesson, I opted not to introduce another technology tool such as Diingo fearing that the lesson would be more about the learning of new technology tools and less about the actual goal of the lesson: writing.

To add to the explanation of why Wetpaint was chosen the ability to add templates to new pages permitted me to integrate the peer edit form directly into a wiki page. This alliviates the need for learners to download and print the form, if for example they do not have access to a printer. Additionally it allows learners to simply switch between pages to view the comments left to them by their peers.

Ramsey, Thanks for reponses! I think you made good chocie on tools. Have you used other wiki tools? Personally, Wetpaint is an effecitve one because it has RSS, tagging, and connected to iGoogle features etc.

I have used pbwiki which I think is a great wiki for those who may be indimidated by the multiple tools available on Wetpaint. pbwiki is extremely straightforward to use. However, for this lesson I need those 'extras'. I even thought about uploading my flash presentation to youtube then embedding them directly into Wetpaint. However, I opted to leave them within the lesson webpages. I didn't want to overcrowd the class wiki with the lesson and keep it solely for the learners work. This is in part due to the limited number of pages Wetpaint permits per site (50 I think). Another reason may be the limited customization permitted with Wetpaint. For example with many blog templates you can customize the CSS page. So far I haven't figured out how to with Wetpaint.

I forgot to mention - with Wetpaint I was able to register the site as an educational site to have the ads taken off the pages. I petitioned and within a day I received a confirmation telling me the adds are gone. This is a great way to keep the site appropriate for use in K-12 and with all learners as their mind stays focused on the materials presented in the text and not be distracted with the ads.

Common Question III: Pitfalls Do you think your web-based lesson plan is effective and successful? Can you foresee any pitfalls in project? Please describe them.

I think it is effective, its success cannot be known until it is put into action. However, I feel that I have created an interactive lesson that guides learners through the process of writing an effective essay. The lesson provides many supports including useful vocabulary, links to grammar exercises, video demonstration of all the technology tools, and discussions to share their experiences and discoveries throughout the process. The lesson engages learners not only in discussions but also in the process of peer editing. From an instructor's viewpoint the lesson plan is very detailed with a step by step process of how to implement the lesson. The lesson flows in a natural progression starting learners off by introducing them to the technology tools and providing an explanation of why they need to learn them, stepping them through the writing process and components of a 5 paragraph essay, and then providing support in how to proofread, edit, and finally publish their work. Potential pitfalls may include the lack of access to headsets or speakers for learners to benefit from the audio portion of the lesson. Students may also find working with new technologies intimidating. However, I believe that I have made a good attempted to break the lesson into smaller 'bit sized' pieces so that learners can fully comprehend one step before moving on to the next. The inclusion of identical text-based lessons, I felt, were also important for those learners who either do not have flash installed and for some reason don't want to install it or for those who prefer a traditional text format. Overall, I think I have constructed a theoretically sound lesson that supports learners while permitting them the freedom to discover in their own way.

Other pitfalls: despite my great effort to provide audio and visual documents for learners with specials needs - depending on those needs their contribution to the peer-editing task may be limited. On this same note, having learners edit each others paper directly in the wiki 1) helps them to visual see within the direct context of the paper errors and corrections but 2) coming from a peer may not necessarily be accurate - this is where instructor guidance is key. Furthermore, learners will need to "clean up" their text before final publication. This could however, help to reinforce areas they need improvement. That is to say the act of going over each correction may provide a needed step in remembering.

Misty, I really enjoyed the lesson on weather. I was just a little confused about the KidPix part of the lesson since I couldn't find it in the student activities pages. I can believe this would be a great lesson for the students and the Parent activities were great. Great job!! Virginia Aim/Purpose -- The entry page tells what the Aim/Purpose of the lesson is to the student - Mastery Lesson Plan - Link to the lesson plan is included and it works -- Mastery Student Activity Page -- The student activity pages describe learning activities in age appropriate language. The rubric is for a lesson on KidPix, but I didn't see anything in the student activities for KidPix. Copies of grading rubrics are available. - Mastery. Parent Page -- Parent page includes creative ideas for engaging students at home. Really creative ideas. I thought the idea of reading the book and making a cake was great, also making the cloud in a jar was cool. - Expert Layout -- The wiki page is very nicely laid out. The graphics on the first page are an interesting start. I especially like the layout on the Parent page. The layout on the student activity page looks shifted to the right, but otherwise all the pages were well done. -- Expert Navigation -- All links are clearly marked and go where you expect to go. All of the links worked -- Expert Graphics -- The graphics used related to the topic and enhanced the instruction. --Expert Accessibility -- Images have ALT tags. -- Expert Fonts - The use of fonts is consistent and easy to read. Pam I liked your wiki lesson plan. Depending on the age of students, the approach you took is very basic, clear, and easy to follow. Unfortunately the rubric asked for items you did not include. Some of it is the problem with wikis (I think) and some are just omitted. I think it might be helpful to give your kids more resources for their research and some more questions to answer on their research so they stay focused. I have not figured out how to post the review on Diigo, but when I do I will. Phil Howardell

Aim/Purpose-Novice-Intro page has very little information on it, but depending on the age group, which I cannot tell, it might be very appropriate. I think this page needs more of an introduction. Lesson Plan-Mastery-Links are clear, easy to find and they all work. Student Activity Page- Mastery-Directions page lack links and you really need to go to each group's pages to get some idea of what to research. Maybe put all the info for research from the group's pages on the directions page. Might be clearer. Parent Page-Novice-No parent page Layout-Mastery-Very basic layout and formatting.
