Traffic deaths on the rise as distracted drivers roam the roads - 0 views

  •
Yet now, after decades of overall improvement in driving safety, traffic fatalities are again on the rise. Deaths increased nationwide 8 percent last year - the largest year-to-year increase in a half-century. For the first six months of 2016, driving fatalities are up 9 percent over the same period last year, the National Safety Council reported Tuesday. The rebounding economy plays a large role, but safety experts say there is a new danger driving part of the increase: distracted driving. Drivers now are not just talking on cellphones - they're texting, using apps to follow directions, even playing Pokemon Go. Stopping this epidemic of distracted driving, safety advocates say, will take a societal shift to render such behavior socially unacceptable.

Cyclocamp2016 - bikekitchen.net - 0 views

The festival should be completely self organized, there should be no "orga-team" providing all the necessary infrastructure or dominating the discourse. Bikekitchen Vienna just organizes basic infrastructure, the rest we do all together. It should also be as cheap as possible, no profit should be made.

Traffic is ruining our lives-but we can be saved BY DON GILLMOR ILLUSTRATION BY MICHAE... - 0 views

Toronto, where the average two-way commute is eighty-two minutes, is plagued by some of the worst congestion in North America. In 2016 rankings released by the navigation tech company TomTom, the city took the ninth spot. Vancouver was fourth, right below Los Angeles. Even sunny Ottawa made the list, tying Montreal for fifteenth place. Few cities around the world are immune from this scourge. In 2010, Beijing had a twelve-day, 100-kilometre traffic jam-and it isn't close to being China's most congested city. Even Lhasa, the placid Buddhist capital of Tibet, has vicious traffic.

Of all our wacky and agitated 21st century culture wars, the most ridiculous and unnecessary, to me, is Bike Haters vs. Bike Lovers. Look: I get that not everyone rides a bicycle, owns a bicycle, or showers with a bicycle (what, you don't shower with a bicycle?

Sharrows: the consolation prize of bike infrastructure. Dick van Veen, a Dutch bike engineer who is currently working in Ottawa, says cyclists often ask him about this symbolic gesture toward bike safety. He says in America, sharrows are often painted on an otherwise inhospitable road.

Over the years we have realised that a large part of our work at Copenhagenize Design Co. in working towards bicycle-friendly cities is the simple art of mythbusting. While time-consuming and often frustrating, it still appears to a necessary part of the dialogue around the world.

How to drive around bicyclists - 0 views

  •
Before you start, my dear commenters - yes, I am aware that not all bicyclists follow the rules of the road. For what it’s worth, I do. But this article is not about that. Unlike some of these other rules that people might not know about, everybody knows this one. And yet, rarely a day passes when I don't have to interact with a motorist who is paying more attention to Instagram than to the huge piece of machinery he or she is operating. Please look at the road while driving. Lives depend on it. When you look at your phone while driving, what you're communicating to me is that you do not value my life. For bicycle commuters, continuing to pedal through the winter months can be a daunting task, especially if one lives in a northern city.
